President’s Convocation

On Tuesday, August 13th, Oakland City University held the annual fall convocation.  The convocation is an assembly of members of the college community who come together to celebrate OCU’s new students’ entry into higher education.  This tradition started at Oxford University in the year 1096.

At exactly 11:00 am, the Bell Tower Plaza bell tolled to celebrate the opening of the 139th academic year by welcoming one of the largest classes to enter Oakland City University.  New students, faculty, and staff marched from the Johnson Center through the campus grounds, gathered in the Cornwell-Reed Recital Hall, and awaited President Dr. Ron Dempsey’s warm welcome and prayer.

Then, OCU Provost Dr. Cathy Robb gave the incoming freshmen advice they would keep with them throughout their time in higher education: “Go to class, participate in class and study.”

Provost Robb introduced Dr. Stephen Kissel, the assistant professor of history at OCU, who inspired everyone.  Dr. Kissell provided a brilliant message about his experience as a new student in college—the four pillars that supported him: communication, creativity, community, and Christ.

After Dr Kissel’s motivating message, Dr Steve Custer led the room in singing the Alma Mater.

After the Alma Mater, Dr James Sigler gave the benediction, and the faculty exited the room.
